Identity Theft Protection

The internet can be a very unsafe place. Currently any personal information that you place on your profile page on social networking or community sites can be viewed by any other person with an account. This situation gives us full exposure to the world, but it also makes all of us more vulnerable to attack by criminals seeking to steal our identities or commit a range of other offences.

OUTeverywhere is aware that, while being the standard for similar sites, the conventional way of publishing personal details does not constitute best privacy practice nor does it protect members. We also know that some people do not enter their personal information because they are concerned at loss of control over it.

"Shield & Scramble" is our pioneering approach to privacy and identify theft protection, incorporating five elements that can change or mask from view certain categories of personal information. However, while we make every effort to help you protect your privacy, you must take responsibility for the information you choose to add to websites as no method can guarantee your total privacy.

Building trust between members

OUTeverywhere members can build a Trust List over time, enabling you to choose which information you reveal and which information you choose to remain hidden.

We advise our members that it's important they only add people to their Trust List if they have met those people in real life or are absolutely sure of their identity and credibility. It's not essential that each member maintains a Trust List, but the existence of the feature helps to educate our members on the importance of protecting their personal data.

Scrambling data to guard against identity theft

We know that honest people don't want to lie in their social networking profiles. However, by providing 100% accurate data about who you are, the place you live, the things you enjoy, the institutions at which you were educated, the friendships you've made and the companies for which you've worked, you release information that can be useful to less honest people looking to use your identity or to engage in cyberstalking.

Our Scrambler enables you to press a button and then leave the rest to us. By choosing this option, our members can enter key personal information into their profile, such as their date of birth and precise location, but the system will subtly morph the data to anyone that is not on the member's Trust List. The Scrambler can be activated along with any of the other four options below.

A sliding scale of protection

Our members may choose one of the options on our sliding scale from full disclosure through to very restricted access to public information:

Our privacy policy
